Mardi Gras to Lent

This past week is one full of things for Christians, be they Protestant or Catholic or Orthodox.  First was Mardi Gras, then Ash Wednesday which set off Lent.  For those who are unaware, this is the start of a forty (40) day fast.  Luckily for most of us, it's not a true fast.  We still get to eat meals and drink when we want, but there are some stipulations, partly dependent on your beliefs and partly how you were raised.  Someone who is already a vegetarian doesn't need to worry about the refusal of meat, at the minimum, on Fridays.  But I do these events a disservice by equating them to minor traditions that can be easily followed and understood.

Giving things up for those forty days is what I was taught to do.  I don't though.  I've never been a fan of having to give up the few things that I call my own.  I freely admit that I don't follow lent nor celebrate Mardi Gras or Ash Wednesday.  The reason why I like this time of year and feel a need to type about it is the huge abundance of fish fries that crop up for the time that Lent covers.  I hated fish as a kid.  Thankfully, I've changed in that respect to an extent.  I'm more willing to have fish though I'm not a large fan of fried fish.  In fact, there are a few dishes that I've been making more regularly at home...and I just realized I went on a tangent so I'm going to finish this post here.
